In this municipality, plastic collected with general waste often ends up in the incinerator. It is frequently contaminated—perhaps it came into contact with the litter box. Contaminated plastic can only be downcycled into items like buckets. New food packaging? Forget about it.

What about it really?
In this municipality, you can throw plastic in your residual waste. A large part of the plastic is lost at the waste processor, directly into the incinerator. A shame, because only a small part is automatically removed from the residual waste. It is often contaminated, may have come into contact with the litter box, and can only be downcycled to buckets or flower pots. It is now too dirty to turn it into new food packaging and is therefore not recycled.
Did you know that plastic is made from petroleum?
Every year, more than 380 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide, of which only 9% is recycled (European Union, 2024*). Plastic is made from fossil fuels, petroleum. However, the global oil supply is finite and, at the rate that we are now using fossil resources from the Earth, they are running out far too quickly. By separating plastic at source, for example in your kitchen, and recycling it, we can reduce the need for new raw materials.
Making new ones out of old packaging?
If you sort your hard plastic packaging, such as shampoo bottles and tomato containers, but also drink cartons separately, we get a cleaner stream. We can make new food packaging from these separately collected packaging. This way, your salad bowl can become a salad bowl again.
How to return plastic and beverage cartons? What is clean?
It's nice when there are no leftover food left in it and the packages are empty. So traces are no problem. It does not need to be rinsed or washed off. That in turn saves time and water. Great if you can deliver everything in a transparent plastic bag. Really, every little bit helps!
